"To the FDNY Friends and Colleagues:

The Fire Department's family and friends are overwhelmed with the tons of mail received filled with expressions of love, hope, prayers, monetary donations to the FDNY family, widows/Children, the replacement of apparatus, offers and help with mental health services, donations of final resting places and funeral/memorial services, the volunteers, the 24 hour feeding of the rescue workers at ground zero and my staff at FDNY headquarters. You name it, we received it from all over the world. We are overwhelmed with your love, prayers and gratitude. It is not possible for us to respond to each and every one of you who shared your gifts of love and kindness with us in our time of need and sorrow. So please accept this posting as our way of saying "THANK YOU" for being there for us.

Love and Respect,
Thomas Von Essen, Fire Commissioner"
